A Research of Young Children’s Recognition on the Warning Pictographs
This research discusses preschool children’s recognition of “warning signs”, and especially on the types of signs that are easily understandable for children and how they distinguish the feature of signs based on their experience. With experimental research method, observation methodology, and semi-contracture interview, this research performed experiments on children aged 3 to 6. Eighteen 18 students of three levels of classes were samples in two kindergartens in central Taiwan, totally 54 students. The theme of this experiment was “Do not play with fire”, and it involved two steps. The first step was the recognition and selection of warning signs; the second one was the interview on recognition and understanding of the warning signs. Step One: Five warning signs (prohibition sign、big cross、small cross、palm、oblique line) were respectively combined with a fire sign presented in black and white colors; the children were asked to select a “warning” sign. Step Two: Interviews were conducted to learn about children’s choices of the warning sign.
The results of this research are as follows:
1. Most of the children selected big cross (40.70%), and this is mainly influenced by “taught experience”.
2. A few children (20.30%) selected prohibition sign as a warning due to the influence of “environmental signs”, followed the palm sign (18.50%).
3. Regarding the selection of signs in each level of class, most children (44.44%) in the elder class chose the big cross, and those in the middle class (47.36%) chose the big cross, and those in the lower class (27.77%) chose the big cross. Most of the children thought that a “cross” represents a warning.
